The site-specific performance Wiek is a collaboration between theatre-director Boukje Schweigman, set- and light designer Theun Mosk and composer Douwe Eisenga
For many years Boukje Schweigman has a fascination for rotating movements. After her successful performance Wervel / Whirl she presented in 2009 the evening-length dance / theater-work Wiek / Rotor. She got the inspiration for Rotor from the never-stopping movement of the light-beams of a fire-tower. This movement gives rest, but in the optical speeding this movement can also be threatening. Rotor is a hypnotizing trip for the audience as well as the performer.
Three female dancers find themselves sharing a circular area with the horizontally rotating blades of a wind turbine. The seated audience surrounds the space, allowing no chance of escape; the dancers must confront their situation.
Feeble humans are compelled to enter into combat with forces far greater than their own, and the audience is made complicit in the inevitable outcome.
